Call for measures to revive Sabah economy

TAWAU: The Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (TCCC) is looking forward to the government to look squarely on the importance of the Sabah economy and reformation of  the labor policy for economic recovery in the future.
Its president Lo Su Fui said there is a dire need for the government to provide the necessary conditions in reviving the state’s economy instead of just relying on the private sector which could only make a small niche to the economy.
He was speaking during a seminar on business opportunity in palm oil biomass downstream entitled ‘Converting Waste to Cash’ held at a hotel here yesterday.
The seminar was jointly organized by TCCC and the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCIM).
“I’m urging the government to assist the private sector in its efforts to bring but small improvement to the regional economy; on the contrary, only the government could create far-reaching economic environmental changes in the future.
Touching on labor policy reformation, he hoped the government could make a study on it so that it could encourage the private sector to recruit 100 per cent legalized foreign workers.
He believed it would bring considerable revenue to the government through legal recruitment of foreign workers in all sectors.
This could reduce the crime rate, Lo said, adding that legalization of foreign workers could become a safeguard for the employers.
Also present was the ACCIM Executive Adviser cum chairman of International Trade and Industry Working Committee Tan Sri Dato’ Soong Siew Hoong.
